Horror. I live in Finland and biggest spiders here are size of a thumb's nail, thank God. One time I was driving and I saw GIGANTIC spider crossing the road. It was bigger than my hand. I don't know where the hell it was coming, but if you're not accustomed to big spiders, you will freak out. I know I did.

@mm Brown recluse spiders are actually small. the picture makes them seem bigger than they are.

The above comment is correct. They're not that big. The largest I'd seen scurrying about the house was about the size of a half dollar. Most being smaller than a quarter. They are long legged suckers though.

99.5% of the time they leave well enough alone and stay out of peoples ways. Thus the name Recluse.

I remember when we moved into this new place. Every time I'd open a closet door or move something, I'd see 3-4. Now I see one a month tops. Thumbs up for pest control and vacuuming. [they dislike interruptions and will move on. The pest control kills the food, not the spider. They walk high and keep their abdomen off the ground at all times]

There's no treatment for a bite. Just antibiotics, pain killers and a possible dose of steroids depending on the reaction. Got bit on the leg by a small one and there was a hole about the size around as a pencil for 2-3 months and the skin was tender over it for 6-8. Serious reactions are rare and large scale necrotic reactions are rarer.

Ah well.. Enough rambling. Thumbs up to the girl for keeping that smile of hers. That's a heck of a reaction to have to go through.

girl's unfortunate but at the same time pretty darn lucky she only got bit on the ear. those bites can cause surface ulcers and nasty-looking complications. not at all what you'd want on your cheek or nose, etc...

Very mild case compared to what I've seen such as amputations of fingers and toes and small to large sections of tissue and muscle. Theres no antivenom for its bite and the effects can last years from mild to severe.
