We have the inventor of autopilot, Lawrence Sperry to thank for the creation of the Mile High Club.

Sperry and socialite, Dorothy Rice Sims are credited with being the first two people to join the Mile High Club. After using autopilot to keep the plane going, they did the deed, and landed in the water.
